Income & Expenditure

The costs of running the parish and maintaining such a large and ancient building are immense – in fact, over £550 per day. Yet, contrary to popular beliefs, we are entirely self-funding. We receive no money from the government or the Church of England and therefore have to cover our considerable costs ourselves. We do so from events, shop sales and generous donations from members of the congregation, visitors and those who want to support us in the work we do in the community.

Our Costs

Your Contributions

If you can, please help us in this task by making a regular or single donation through the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS). It’s very simple to set or alter your monthly amount and 25% Gift Aid for UK taxpayers gets added automatically. If you prefer not to join online, forms are available at the welcome desk or donation station near the Abbey main door. Regular giving of any amount is so important in helping us to meet our monthly financial responsibilities.

We are also most grateful for donations by cash or card at any of the donation stations when you visit the Abbey, where you can also include your Gift Aid details.

Incidentally, Harvest Festival in October, may not make you think of money specifically. The traditional themes of the day are gratitude and generosity. Gratitude for the gifts of God in creation, and specifically for our bountiful supply of food. And then generosity as a proper outworking of that gratitude. For many, it’s uncomfortable talking about money, but have a read of our vicar’s last Harvest sermon which describes this rather well.

You may be assured of our grateful thanks and prayers for everything you can spare.

A gift for life

Leaving a legacy

Most people will only leave a gift in their will if they think their church will use it for worthwhile projects, not simply to fund operating costs.

We welcome all gifts in wills, however large or small, and we promise to use
your gift to make a difference in our parish. Our PCC legacy policy is to use gifts to help fund significant development projects; whether buildings, equipment, mission or staff. Since needs change over the years, we encourage you to leave a gift in your will for the general purposes of the parish rather than for a restricted purpose.

We will discuss possible uses of your gift with your executors when the time comes, bearing in mind your known areas of interest in the church (e.g. music, buildings, children and youth, overseas mission or aid) and the church’s priorities at the time.

You can be confident that your gift will be used to make a real difference to our future mission and ministry.

If you are considering leaving something to the Abbey and would like to talk to Chris Grant our Treasurer about it, please get in touch.

Thank you

We Appreciate all

. . . . who help us to keep this beautiful Abbey open for everyone to enjoy.
